Discover Sailing with Offshore Sailing School

Sailing is a great way to discover the adventure of being on the water and using the wind to guide you to your destination. Learning how to sail is much easier that you think and a school like Off Shore Sailing School with locations at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan and Liberty Landing in New Jersey makes it even easier. The instructors demystify sailing, making it easy for you to sail with a crew or even handle a 26-foot sailboat on your own at the end of a basic three-day "Learn How to Sail" lesson. Learning how to sail is also great fun for the whole family and couples.

"We want to introduce the sailing lifestyle to families and singles looking for a way to get away without going away," says Tyler Pierce, Offshore's Northern Regional Operations Manager. "Discover Sailing" is a concept developed over five years ago by Sail America, the industry association for companies involved in sailing, to "encourage anyone with a bent for lifestyle activities to just try it," says Doris Colgate, Sail America board member and CEO of Offshore Sailing School.

Offshore Sailing School, founded in 1964 by America's Cup and Olympic sailor, and Huntington native, Steve Colgate, has taught more than 100,000 adults and young adults to sail since its start on Long Island Sound. With 10 locations in the Caribbean, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Newport, RI, the school provides six levels of US Sailing certified. US Sailing is the governing body of sailing in the United States, appointed by Congress and offers the highest level of consumer and instructor certifications in the nation.

On June 18 and 19, to celebrate the summer solstice, Off Shore Sailing School offers "Set Sail on the Summer Sailstice: A Learning Experience on the Water and Under Sail" at Liberty Landing Marina, Jersey City and Chelsea Piers in NYC. You can share the adventure of being out on the water with the wind as your guide for just $45 for a 2-hour sail with an instructor. It also makes a great Father's Day gift. Call 800-221-4326 to reserve your time slot with Offshore now. Space is limited to 4 per boat, 16 per two-hour session - so don't delay!

"Summer Sailstice," the official holiday for sailors in the Northern Hemisphere, was founded to connect the global sailing community in a fun, creative, multifaceted way. Offshore Sailing School's great Florida summer getaway is for families looking for a learning vacation that is both fun and long-lasting. From June 19 through September 30, each parent taking a sailing course at published tuition rates can bring one child or teen (11-17) to learn with them absolutely free. "Sailing is an activity that brings families together. When we see youngsters and teens get excited about sailing, we know we've established a meaningful family connection to a lifetime outdoor activity," says Doris Colgate.

The "Kids and Teens Sail Free" offer is available at Offshore's three Florida resort destinations (Pink Shell Resort in Ft. Meyers, Hawk Cay on Duck Key, in the Keys, and Mansion House Bed & Breakfast in St. Petersburg) for the school's Learn to Sail course and cruising courses. Offshore's most popular program is "Fast Track to Cruising" which starts with the three-day Learn to Sail course on the school's signature Colgate 26 sailboats and segues immediately into a cruising course on 36 and 46 foot Hunter yachts. The Learn to Sail course (Basic Keelboat Certification) is a pre-requisite for both cruising courses. The Bareboat Cruising Preparation course lasts five days while the Live Aboard Cruising course is six days long and the whole family lives and learns sailing aboard a spacious three or four-cabin Hunter 46. For families who just want to learn to sail, a five-day Learn to Sail course allows for play time between classroom and sailing sessions, a relaxed way to learn a new skill while enjoying all the activities of a destination resort.

Packages include lesson tuition, accommodations and applicable. There is no tuition charge for 11-17 year-olds accompanying an adult (one per adult) during this special "Kids and Teens Sail Free" offer. For more information, call 800-221-4326 Monday through Friday 8:30-5:30 EST.
