Gurney's Inn Thalasso Spa Offers Healing from the Sea
by Christine Lynn Harvey

If you're looking for a total mind, body and spirit make-over, then the best place to come is Gurney's Inn Resort, Spa & Conference Center in Montauk, NY. Gurney's is a five-star resort that features the only authentic Thalasso center in the United States where spa waters are fed by healing sea water surrounding the resort. When you swim in the seawater-fed indoor heated pool or Roman baths featuring waterfalls, you feel as though you have come to an ancient healing sanctuary.

People from all over, including Hollywood celebrities, to Washington movers and shakers, visit Gurney's to "take the healing waters." You never know who'll bump into here while lounging around in your spa robes. The skilled therapists revive and restore your body and mind while your spirit absorbs the raw unspoiled beauty of Montauk. Carl Fisher, the multibillionaire developer who turned a south Florida mangrove swamp into Miami Beach prior to making Montauk the Miami of the north in the 1920's, preserved much of Montauk's pristine beauty. Reserving a week long or weekend mini vacation here is just what the doctor ordered.

Giancarlo statues inspired by Botticelli's Birth of Venus are strategically placed throughout the resort reminding guests of the birth giving, magical, love-inspired, rejuvenating powers of the sea. Gurney's Thalasso program includes a holistic approach using sea water hydromassage, aquacise programs in seawater pools, body treatments with seaweed-based products, good nutrition and seaside physical activities.

One of Gurney's signature spa treatments - a seaweed body wrap, includes being wrapped in a mudpack of seaweed and minerals that detoxify and moisturize your skin. Seaweed has many healing properties and is found in many of the Gurney's signature line products. Moisturizers are infused with Solar Photospheres that penetrate the dermis to repair damage to cells' DNA from overexposure to the sun and powerful antioxidants strengthen the collagen matrix. 70% of the ingredients are in a food-grade seaweed base, providing a nutrient-rich product that feeds and protects the skin on a deep cellular level. "We love our products and so does everyone else because they're all natural and contain essential oils," says Cheryl Hartsough, RD, Spa Director.

Other spa treatments include: Marine Kur Therapy (loofah exfoliation, toning seaweed gel, Thalasso hydromassage and mineral-rich seaweed body wrap), Peppermint Sea Plunge (loofah exfoliation, seaweed toning gel, Thalasso hydromassage, peppermint essential oils), Ultimate Detox Therapy (skin dry brushing, Argite mud wrap with herbal extracts, Thalasson hydromassage & steam infusion with re-mineralizing gel), Algae Slimming Bath (100% micronized algae extract added to a heated Thalasso therapy tub) and Shirodhara Sanctuary Treatment (herbal exfoliation, heated infused oil dripped over forehead, scalp massage and herbal-infused body wrap with Ayurvedic body oils). Gurney's also uses thermalism therapy in their spa treatments - alternating hot and cold temperatures during applications to promote relaxation, stimulate lymphatic drainage, boost metabolism and circulation and help with the elimination of toxins within the body.

Gurney's also features a salon that leaves you looking like a movie star -pedicures, manicures, hair styling, hair coloring, paraffin wax treatments, hair removal services and make-up will make you feel like a million bucks. "Once a man has one of our luxury spa pedicures or manicures, there's no going back. Men simply love it!" says Hartsough. The salon also features specials for bridal parties, holiday themes and mother-daughter treatments. The idea is to treat yourself royally and be treated royally by Gurney's staff while you're here.

Accommodations are extra special - 109 deluxe ocean view suites with private balconies (with corner suites featuring large L-shaped decks) offer spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and Montauk Point; these rooms feature a king-size bed and salon with pull-out couch, Italian-tiled bathrooms, coffee machine and refrigerator.

Five romantic beach cottages are hidden gems and feature sunken living rooms and other amenities. All guests of the resort are entitled to use the fitness and seawater spa facilities from soaking in the Roman bath, swimming in the Thalasso pool, using the sauna and steam room to napping in the siesta room - a quiet room where guests can literally fall asleep after treatments. The Thalasso spa, opened in 1979, was the vision of inn owner Nick Monte, who bought Gurney's in 1956. Gurney's was opened by Maude Gurney in 1926 and celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Monte reportedly drinks a glass of seawater every day and dedicates his life and soul to alternative and complementary seawater therapy.

Gurney's fitness facilities include a full gym and classes from Spinning to hatha and kundalini yoga, pilates, beach walks to nature hikes, ocean aerobics, aqua jogging in the thalasso pool and more. There are also plenty of activities to do outside the spa from hiking around Montauk Point, playing golf at the challenging Montauk Downs - one of the ten best courses in the US, to mountain biking, horseback riding on the beach, whale watching, off shore fishing, surfcasting, birding and of course shopping!

Try dining in Gurney's famed Sea Grill which features fine Italian and seafood cuisine. The Vitello Saltimbocca is out of this world - a mildly flavored brown gravy accented by Marsala and sage surround tender veal medallions smothered in Prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella and sautéd spinach. It's so good you won't mind ordering it two nights in a row! Don't skip dessert either. Try the crème brulee, tiramisu parfait or cherried trifle.

Each year in October, Gurney's is host to the Hamptons International Film Festival Opening Gala Party. Stay as a guest and pay a ticket to mingle with the players of Hollywood East. Who knows who you'll bump into - from East End residents to up-and-coming stars in break-away roles. You can say you met them before they were famous. For more info and tickets to next year's event, call HIFF at 631-324-4600 or visit

Fall 2006 specials include a 2 Night Stay in an oceanfront room, breakfast for 2 ($15 credit pp), gourmet dinner for 2 ($26 credit pp) and use of the Thalasso spa for $630 including tax and gratuities.
